The Cure for Backsliding
After I finished the book of Isaiah, as I have been slowly going through the Bible at my own pace, I kinda hesitated before starting Jeremiah. I knew that it was mostly going to be about how the people of God had turned to other things and rejected Him and that Jeremiah was going to spend a lot of time trying to wake them up to the truth!
So, I read other parts of the Bible and then, on my birthday, I thought, just start Jeremiah.
Right out the gate this was the verse, and I had somehow forgotten it:
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart Jeremiah 1:5a
What timing! And the same verse was written into a birthday card that my friend Norma gave me.
As I have been proceeding through Jeremiah I am reminded about how many things we let steal our attention away from God. So. Many. Things.
And what does He do? He keeps calling us back. He reminds us that He is "a spring of Living Water."
He didn't just call Himself Living Water. He is a "spring" of Living Water. (Jeremiah 2:13) That means that He is constantly flowing with all that we need. He is moving in us with energy and vitality and refreshing us in every way that we need.
Sometimes we need that wake up call. A LOT of times I need that wake up call. But, God is so faithful and merciful that He just keeps on calling us back.
All the idols that the people chose to put in place of God kept giving them something temporary to focus on and yet left them in such a bad condition. Instead of pointing fingers at them like I used to, I realize how often I've done the same thing and I thank God that He keeps identifying anything that steals my focus and therefore steals my joy.
Look at a verse that I underlined today:
"Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding." "Yes, we will come to you, for you are the LORD our God." Jeremiah 3:22
He will cure you of backsliding! Remove this thought: "I just keep slipping up. I will never get it right." Replace it with God, the Lord my God will cure me of backsliding!
