One of the biggest and worst traps we get into is the EXPECTATION TRAP.
What do I mean by that?
Whether we have expectations for ourselves or expectations of other people…..eventually either we or they end up failing and we get defeated and disappointed.
How in the world do we avoid having expectations that lead to disappointment?
I really believe this is where we have misplaced expectation. We want our spouse to do or be all that we want them to be. We want our children to act like perfect little reflections of us (oh, yikes, maybe not! Lol). We want our friends to always be there for us when we need them and when they’re not, well we distance ourselves or act ungodly. We want our boss to be a certain way. We want to be perfect ourselves.
I hope it is obvious that we are going to be disappointed if that is how we think. The thing is….we DO think that way! We have in our minds what the best response would be from someone and then we don’t get it and we’re let down. We have in our minds how someone should act and then they don’t and then we are sad and bitter.
As my girlfriend so wisely said the other day, “we need to build that relationship with our Heavenly Father - who doesn't have the human failings”
We are going to fail our children. They are going to fail us. We are going to fail our spouse. They are going to fail us. We are going to fail at things all along the way and people will fail us all along the way. But, if we are focused on people meeting our needs or our own perfection as being the solution to problems then once again we have focused on the impossible!
So, the solution is to focus on building that relationship with our Heavenly Father who never fails us. When we put our expectations on Him, we have such an easier spirit toward people and ourselves. We are all human. We will all fail at times. Stop expecting the impossible from people or yourself! Start expecting God to meet your needs the way He knows best!
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
